Social: Incomplete X Cards

back to issues overview

Incomplete X Cards

Pages that are missing one or more of the six basic X Card meta tags that should be included on a page for complete markup.

These include twitter:card, twitter:site, twitter:creator, twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image.

If one of these tags is missing or lacks content, it will be considered incomplete.

However, due to diminished official support, current thinking is often to only include the twitter:card tag to specify the card type (as summary_large_image), and use OG tags as fallback. If this is the case, this issue will not trigger.

How to Analyse in the SEO Spider

View URLs with this issue in the ‘Social’ tab and ‘Incomplete X Cards’ filter, and export all URLs using the ‘Export’ button.

What Triggers This Issue

This issue is triggered when one of twitter:card, twitter:site, twitter:creator, twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image is missing or blank.

Example:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image"/>
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@yoursite"/>
<meta name="twitter:creator" content="@author"/>
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your headline"/>
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your 2nd headline"/>
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Your exciting description."/>
</head>
<body>
...
</body>
</html>

In the example above, the twitter:image tag is missing.

However, if twitter:card exists, and the four basic Open Graph tags are present (og:url, og:title, og:description and og:image), then this set up will not be considered incomplete, as the OG tags will be used as a fallback.

How To Fix

Review pages with incomplete X meta tags and consider adding required tags on important pages to control how the content appears on X.

If OG tags are being used as a fallback, then only the twitter:card tag is recommended to specify card type.
