Social: X Card Image Over 5MB

back to issues overview

X Card Image Over 5MB

Pages that have a twitter:image specified that is over 5MB in size.

While documentation for X Cards has been deprecated, this was the previously outlined limit, which might mean they are not used in snippets.

Images should be optimised and much smaller than the 5MB limit.

What Triggers This Issue

This issue is triggered when a page has a twitter:image that is over 5MB in size.

Example:

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@yoursite">
<meta name="twitter:creator" content="@author">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your headline">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Your exciting description." >
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/image.jpg">

And the image URL https://example.com/image.jpg is over 5MB.

How To Fix

Ensure that images specified in twitter:image are optimised and below the 5MB limit so it can be used by X. Optimise images using compression to reduce file size.

Consider encoding JPEG and PNG images into new formats such as WebP which allow for greater compression to enable them to load faster and consume less data.
