Images: Missing Image Title

back to issues overview

Missing Image Title

Images that are missing a title attribute in the image element. Image titles are optional metadata that users will see when they hover over an image with a mouse for additional context.

While the title attribute is not used in scoring of pages, experiments suggest they are used in image ranking.

How to Analyse in the SEO Spider

View URLs with this issue in the ‘Images’ tab and ‘Missing Image Title’ filter, and export all URLs using the ‘Export’ button.

Click the address of the image and then the ‘Image Details’ tab in the lower window pane to view which pages have the image on them, and are missing a title.

Export them in bulk via ‘Bulk Export > Images > Images Missing Title Inlinks’.

What Triggers This Issue

This issue is triggered when an image on a page either does not have the title attribute, or it is blank.

For example:

<img src="image.jpg" alt="alt text" title="">
<img src="image.jpg" alt="alt text">

How To Fix

Review whether images missing title attributes need extra context, and if so, add it via the image title attribute (which shows as a tooltip).

Since this only reaches mouse users, first consider whether that context would be better placed in plain text instead.

If image search traffic matters to you, consider providing identified images a descriptive title.
