Social: Missing X Cards

back to issues overview

Missing X Cards

Pages that are missing X Cards meta tags. X Cards are structured markup in the HTML about the content of the page that allow control of snippets used on X and displayed to users when content is shared on the platform.

While the official Card Validator was deprecated in 2022 and there is no longer an official specification for X Cards, they can still be used by X.

OG Tag equivalents are used as a fallback, but the twitter:card tag is still recommended for summary_large_image.

How to Analyse in the SEO Spider

View URLs with this issue in the ‘Social’ tab and ‘Missing X Cards’ filter, and export all URLs using the ‘Export’ button.

What Triggers This Issue

This issue is triggered when there are no X Cards meta tags in the HTML or they are all blank.

For example:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta name="twitter:card" content=""/>
<meta name="twitter:site" content=""/>
<meta name="twitter:creator" content=""/>
<meta name="twitter:title" content=""/>
<meta name="twitter:description" content=""/>
<meta name="twitter:image" content=""/>
</head>
<body>
...
</body>
</html>

How To Fix

Review pages without X Card meta tags and consider using them on pages where it’s important to control how the content appears on X.

As official support has diminished, then current thinking is often to only use the single twitter:card tag alongside OG tags, which will be used as a fallback.
